STEM Walls: Hands-On Learning for Curious Minds

Children exploring colourful STEM wall gears and activities alongside the words Build, Test, Discover.

What happens when you turn this gear? Can you make a pattern with these colours? How could you change your design?

A STEM wall creates a place where questions like these become hands-on investigations. Through building, connecting, threading and experimenting, children can explore ideas, work through challenges and discover different ways to create.

For educators, STEM walls offer a flexible starting point for both open-ended play and planned learning experiences.

What Is a STEM Wall?

A STEM wall is an activity panel designed to hold compatible components such as pegs, gears, chains and lacing accessories. Children arrange and rearrange these pieces to create designs, investigate movement and test their ideas.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A wall can bring several of these learning areas together through practical play—for example, exploring how connected gears move or using pegs and laces to investigate shapes and patterns.

The activities depend on the wall and accessories selected. Some setups focus on creative peg play, while others offer opportunities to explore mechanisms, construction or ball runs.

What Can Children Explore?

Problem-solving and persistence

When a design doesn’t work as expected, children have a reason to pause, investigate and try something different. Educators can support this process by asking, “What could you change?” and allowing time for children to test their own solutions.

Fine motor skills

Placing pegs, threading laces and using compatible hand tools give children opportunities to practise controlled hand movements and hand-eye coordination.

Early mathematical thinking

Colours, shapes, repeating patterns and spatial arrangements provide starting points for mathematical conversations. Children might copy a sequence, compare designs or work out how much space they need.

Communication and collaboration

Shared building spaces invite children to explain ideas, negotiate where pieces will go and work towards a common design.

Choosing a STEM Wall for Your Space

Consider the available floor space, children’s ages, the activities you want to offer and which accessories are included.

A Wall and Accessories Together

The Double-Sided STEM Wall & Accessories Set – 624 Pieces combines a mobile, free-standing wall with pegs, gears, a chain and gemstone blocks.

Its double-sided format provides activity space on both sides, making it an option for shared exploration and creative building.

A Workbench for Varied Investigations

The Mobile STEM Activity Station combines vertical STEM panels with a horizontal building surface and integrated storage.

Included gears and chain, hand power tools, and water chute and ball run accessories offer different starting points for building and experimenting.

A Compact Discovery Space

The Compact Double-Sided STEM Wall offers a smaller, movable format for hands-on activities.

Pair it with compatible Jumbo Pegs and other suitable Edu-21 STEM Wall accessories to introduce different activities over time. Pegs and accessories are sold separately.

Three Invitations to Explore

1. Get Things Moving

Use the STEM Wall Gears & Chain – 39 Piece Set to investigate how movement transfers between connected components.

Start with a simple challenge: “Can you connect three gears so they all turn?” Then invite children to predict what will happen before turning the knob.

Screws and pegs are sold separately.

2. Build with Tools

Introduce the STEM Wall Hand Tools – 6 Piece Set with compatible STEM Wall Screws.

Encourage children to explore which tool fits, how to tighten and loosen a screw, and how tools can help them assemble a design.

Compatible screws are sold separately.

3. Thread a Pattern

The STEM Wall Lacing Pegs & Laces – 230 Piece Set offers a creative way to investigate lines, shapes and sequences.

Invite children to weave a repeating colour pattern, make a geometric shape or create a picture. Leave room for their own ideas to guide the activity.

Keep the Discoveries Coming

Begin with a manageable selection of components, then introduce new challenges as children become familiar with the materials. Photographing a design can help children revisit their thinking, describe what they made and plan their next attempt.

Choose resources suited to the children using them, check accessory compatibility and follow the individual product’s age and supervision guidance. The products featured here are listed for ages three and over.
