Bring storytelling and cultural learning into the classroom with this beautifully crafted Fish Trap Play Set, inspired by traditional Indigenous Australian fishing practices. Designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and respect for cultural heritage, this set allows children to explore sustainable fishing techniques through imaginative, hands-on play.
The playset draws inspiration from the Menang Nyungar fish traps used in Oyster Harbour, WA, for over 6,500 years. These ingenious rock formations trapped larger fish as tides receded, while smaller fish were able to escape—an early example of sustainable fishing. The woven-style fish trap included in the set reflects similar practices used in river systems, where fish were caught and then carried back to camp. Elder Len Collard’s fishing stories inspired the creation of this set, encouraging cultural connection, storytelling, and play-based learning.
