Bring storytelling, culture, and colour into your classroom with this stunning set of Indigenous Seasons Book Boxes, featuring specially commissioned artwork by award-winning contemporary Aboriginal artist DJ Mate. Inspired by the traditional stories of the Dharawal People as told by Frances Bodkin in The Annual Cycle – The Season of Ngoonungi, these boxes are more than storage – they’re a cultural journey.
Each side of the box tells part of a seasonal story, beginning with the gathering of the Ngoonungi (Grey-Headed Flying Foxes) at sunset, moving through possum tracks and nocturnal sounds, and ending with the arrival of gentle rains and community feasting as seafood restrictions are lifted. The story continues around the box panels, and a full description of the illustrations and their cultural significance is included on the back for easy sharing with students.
